"At 5:00 pm on 24 December 1898, 333 years of Spanish rule in Cebu came to an end when the Spanish flag was lowered at Fort San Pedro. Montero turned over the government [to the Filipinos] ... It was an emotion-charged moment and, in a fit of despair, some Spaniards tore their own flag after it was lowered. In the dusk, the ceremonies over, the Spaniards and their dependents moved out in a lonely convoy of boats bound for Zamboanga, their way station for the final withdrawal to Spain."

Summary: The gold hilt of this 10th to 13th century Philippine gold dagger was found in northeast Mindanao (Butuan). It was styled after a mythical bird. The design can be the predecessor of the Maranaw sarimanok.
Ang caption sa Ayala Museum ng puluhan:
[GOLD] HILT: Northeastern Mindanao; Ca. [circa] 10th - 13th century; 10.5 x 10.5 cm; 64.4 grams
And he [Raja Calambu, of what is now Agusan del Norte province in Mindanao island] was the most handsome person we saw among those peoples. He had very black hair to his shoulders, with a silk cloth on his head, and two large gold rings hanging from his ears. He wore a cotton cloth, embroidered with silk, which covered him from his waist to his knees. At his side he had a dagger, with a long handle, and all of gold, the sheath of which was of carved wood. Withal he wore on his person perfumes of storax and benzoin. He was tawny and painted all over ["pintado", i.e., tattooed all over]. His island is called Butuan and Calaghan."

[Lumad is a term being used to denote a group of indigenous peoples of the southern Philippines. It is a Cebuano term meaning "native" or "indigenous". The term is short for katawhang lumad (literally "indigenous peoples") ... It is the self-ascription and collective identity of the non-Islamized indigenous peoples of Mindanao.]
